PBL stands for project based learning which is a process by which classroom practices embrace innovation and creativity as a means of educating our students. It has a strong focus on the student’s development of things such as problem-solving, brain storming and adaptation. The article discusses the importance of student creativity as we usher in the “Fourth Industrial Revolution”. An era said to be marked by the fusion of digital, physical and biological systems in our world.

We have all heard about the pitfalls of teaching focused on standardized testing and other assessments. It lacks the experiential component that students desperately need to develop critical thinking skills, creativity, relational intelligence, and more. In order to make the marks required by testing standards teachers have often been forced to abandon innovative and creative manners of presenting materials. It is time to accept that this approach actually leaves our students lacking in fundamental skills they will need to thrive in our global society. Classrooms can, and should be innovative and creative while presenting necessary materials.

The article cites The Future of Jobs Report (World Economic Forum) as saying that “creativity will be one of the top three required skills by the year 2020. Workers will need to seek out novel solutions, apply knowledge in different ways, and consider options for problems that have never before existed.”

So how do we encourage the growth of creativity in our students? Complex Problem Solving, Critical Thinking and Creativity are listed by the afore mentioned report as the top three employee values by 2020. Therefore, it stands to reason that the students who possess these skills will be the ones with the competitive edge and opportunities to succeed.
